Working with the Rainbow
diff
erent ways to use light & color for healing

Copyright… Kathie Strmota, LoveLight Co-Creative HealthCare

You may not be aware of it, but your body receives the vibrations of different colors every day…   from the clothes you wear and from the paint on your walls, from the sunset, and even from the tinted lenses of your glasses.
Light and color permeate our lives, and we cannot escape their influence.   What we can do, however, is use them consciously to influence our physical, emotional, mental and energetic well being.   Conscious and controlled use of light and color can be a very powerful way to positively influence the vibration of disease patterns within the body, with the intention of entraining the energetic system to a new, more harmonious, vibrational pattern.

The aim, when selecting colours to use for the body is to answer the questions…   ‘What vibration is lacking?’ or ‘What vibration is in excess?’
In order to restore balance, when a vibration is lacking it should be added and, when it is in excess, its complementary (or opposite) colour should be used.   You may all remember the colour wheel from school… red and green are complementary colours, purple and yellow are complementary, blue and orange are complementary.
In most cases, the way I work is to use both the treatment color and its complementary color, in varying degrees, according to the body’s need.
As Pauline Willis states in her book Colour Reflexology:   The complementary colour is used alongside the treatment colour because human beings are composed of opposites.   We have a right and left hemisphere to our brain.   If we breathe in we must breathe out.   We contain both the male and female energies.   In order to become whole, we have to accept these opposites and then transcend them.   By using a colour together with its complementary we are working with opposites in order to help bring about a state of wholeness.”
And I have found that, in my experience, the body does often request colors in this way.

For the purpose of restoring vibrational balance, it is generally best to use bright, clear, vibrant colors, rather than their murky or washed out counterparts.   For example, if green is called for, try to use a strong emerald or forest green, rather than a browny olive or mustard green.   For orange, use a bright citrus orange rather than a dusty ochre orange.   Having said that, whatever the body requests is exactly what it needs.   So, if you need green, and you get a really strong urge to wear that mustard green jumper (and not because of how sexy it makes you look!) then, by all means, go with that.

In the body, an imbalance such as inflammation is a hot, irritated physical and energetic state (red/orange), and needs cooling and calming down (green/blue).   Even without the help of a reference book, I imagine that most of you would logically, or intuitively, come to the same conclusion.
We also seem to intuitively know what is needed for our emotional states.   Someone who is chronically sullen and withdrawn is encouraged to get out in the sunshine and wear bright clothes.   You would expect to find a lot of grey or black in their wardrobe.
Years ago, I lived with a man who was quick to anger (and I also used to fire up quite easily).   It was quite an emotionally wild time.   I found, when I looked back at that period of my life that, over time, I had ceased to wear red altogether.   I did not have a stitch of red in my entire wardrobe – not even a ribbon – and very few warm colours overall.   My wardrobe had become a blurr of cool colours… blues, purples and greens.   It is as if I had instinctively known that what I needed around me, and what he needed to see and absorb, were cooling colours to keep our vibrations below the anger threshold…   Its puts me in mind of that saying: “its like a red rag to a bull”.
These effects are very real, and we are continuously influenced by light and colour, whether we know it or not.

In the chakra system, the lower chakras carry the slower frequencies of red, orange and yellow, while the higher chakras carry the higher frequencies of blue, indigo and violet.   The heart chakra, in the middle, carries the vibration of green, the general healing and balancing color.   It represents harmony and balanced body polarities.
In disease, there may be over-stimulation, with too much red in the system, (indicated by things such as fever, inflammation, irritability, skin rashes, bloodshot eyes, and pink fingernails) or there may be under-activity, with too much blue, (indicated by pale skin, sluggishness, a bluish tinge to the eyes, bluish nails, and a general anaemic appearance).   The over-stimulated, hot condition needs treatment with the colors green or blue, while the under-active condition requires treatment with red or orange.
The same applies to the chakras themselves.   When a chakra is over-energised it needs treatment with its complementary color to help slow it down a bit and, when it is under-energised, it needs more of its own color.
It is preferable, when working generally with the body, to use stimulating colours in the morning and sedating colours in the evening.   If a sequence of colours is to be used for a general balance, start with stimulating colours, then proceed to the blues and purples, and finish with green as the balancer and harmoniser.

Choosing the most appropriate Colors

So, when it comes to chakras, or body conditions that are not obviously ‘hot’ or ‘cold’, how do you know what colors you need?
You can get yourself a reference on the qualities of the individual colors, and what conditions they're most beneficial for.   This can be a helpful starting guide to see which color is in excess or lacking when you have a particular body condition, and will give you a bit of direction.
There are also several other ways you can identify what is needed but, to use them effectively, you need to trust your intuition and inner feelings (which will never let you down if you actually trust them and don’t let your logic get too involved!)   Regardless of the method you use, be sure to have the question (your intention) clear in your mind...   What color is most appropriate for me now? or What color do I need most right now?   If you are working with a specific physical condition, like a broken leg or kidney disease, ask the question...   ‘What color is most appropriate now to help restore balance to my leg / my kidneys?’   The same applies if you are working with an emotional condition…   ‘What color is most appropriate now to help me release this anger / feel more confident / feel motivated / forgive my mother?’ and so on.

If you are able to use muscle testing to get answers, this is an option, and dowsing over a colour wheel, using a pendulum, is another option.   For those of you who aren’t practiced in these areas, use some of the following ‘pot luck’ methods.   Trust me, your body will draw the right answer to you.
You could make a range of cards, each coloured with one of the beautiful colours of the rainbow.   Include lots of lovely ‘in between’ shades as well.   (With computers today, that’s an easy task!)   You can shuffle these cards, and select them in the same way as you’d select guidance cards, by picking one off the top of the deck.   You could also fan them out and allow your hand to pass over each one until you feel the tingle that tells you which particular vibration your body requires.
Another way to do it is to collect a range of coloured glass beads (or tumbled stones) and keep them in a little white cotton bag which allows some degree of light to reach them.   Just put your hand in, blindly, and feel around until your fingers feel the right bead or stone.   That colour will be the one you need.
Or you can simply ask your system   ‘What colour do I need now?’ and see what name or image of a colour pops up in your mind.   Don’t worry if it doesn’t make sense, or if you think ‘Eeuw! I hate that colour!’   Just trust your system and go with it.   It will be exactly what you need.
You can also take this further and ask about what form of administration (more about this later) is most appropriate, where to apply the colour, for how long, and whether any follow-up colours are needed.

Applying Color

There is no specific time frame in relation to applying color to the body.   It is very much an individual process, depending upon the person’s own situation, the nature of the imbalance and the source of the color treatment.
In the framework of a healing session, using a high quality torch, I find that enough color can often be administered within a few minutes because the energy is already geared to the healing process and the body is just taking a trigger of what it needs to restore itself.   In some other situation, it may be more appropriate to expose the body to a particular color for an hour or more and, in yet another circumstance, you may have the urge to wear purple every day for a month!
I think the best thing to do is simply to follow your intuition and urges as much as possible.
If you need a rule of thumb to get you started, I’d say the more intense the light source and the more transparent the colour filter, the less time is probably needed.   So, sunlight through green cellophane onto bare skin may be best at no more than 15 minutes, while you may need to wear a green cotton shirt for a day or two to get the same benefit.
As I said, its best not to think too much about this.   Trust your urges.   Whatever you feel is right, will be right.   You’re not going to do any major damage if you ‘get it wrong’, so to speak, so don’t be afraid to explore.
Just bear in mind the safety issues of over-exposing the skin to sunlight, and of exposing the eyes directly to bright light.   Use your common sense in this.

Color can be applied directly to the affected body part or, if it is an internal organ, directly to the area of skin above the organ.
For a general body or systemic balance, a color can be applied to the entire body or energy field, or taken internally as a vibrational essence.   It can also be absorbed through the eyes, by looking at something of the appropriate color (including the colored selection cards I mentioned earlier), or by having the appropriate colored lenses on your glasses.

Color can also be applied to the reflex areas (on either the hands or feet) that relate to the affected body part.   Using the hand or foot reflexes can be a convenient and effective way of administering color if you are treating yourself and cannot comfortably access the area, or if the area is too sensitive to be covered or directly treated with light, or if you are working with someone else who may be uncomfortable about having attention focused directly on their private parts.
Sometimes, for an internal organ, the body will request both the direct skin area above the organ, as well as the reflexes, and I believe that the vibration accesses the tissues in slightly different ways.
A reflexology chart can easily be obtained from many health and healing related stores or magazines.   You can probably even photocopy one out of a book in your local library, or download one from the web.

If you are familiar with meridians and alarm points, you can also apply colour directly to the major points related to specific body areas.   This is similar to the idea of using the reflexes, however it will help to balance the energy flow within the relevant meridian and this will have a benefit on all other body areas nourished by that meridian as well.
For chakras, you can apply colour to the whole section of torso in which the relevant chakra is situated.   You don’t need to worry too much if you are using a piece of clothing and it overlaps into another chakra area.
For the base chakra, it would be around the bottom, thighs and pubic area, including the legs.   For the Sacral chakra, the area between the belly button and the pubic bone in front, and the coccyx in back.   For the Solar Plexus chakra, the area between the end of the breastbone and the belly button in front, and the lumbar spine in back.   For the Heart chakra, the middle chest area, around the breasts, in front and the thoracic spine in back.   For the Throat chakra, the area from the upper chest and shoulders to the upper lip and jaw, including the cervical spine.   For the Third Eye chakra, the middle of the head, including forehead, eyes, ears and nose, and the back of the skull.   For the Crown chakra, the circular section of the top of the head.

The body can be exposed to light in a multitude of ways and, although I’m giving you a range of suggestions here, I encourage you to be creative and follow your own intuitive urges.   You can use all these methods on yourself or on another person (with their permission, of course!), as well as on your pets, your plants and your home.
To simplify it a bit, I’ve placed the different methods into three broad groups:   a) direct light   b) indirect or reflected light   c) vibrational or ‘invisible’ light.

Direct Light

Application of direct light includes any situation where light from a light source (sunlight, a light globe or a torch) is filtered through some kind of transparent, or semi-transparent, material such as glass or light fabric or a clear crystal.
When light moves through a semi-transparent object, some of it is reflected back off the pigment on the surface of the object, in a very specific wave and frequency, reaching our eyes and enabling us to register what color the object is.   Some of the light, however, is able to move through the object and be transmitted to whatever is on the other side of it.   The more transparent something is, the less the color is seen by the viewer, and the more light is able to pass through it, carrying that particular vibration.
A light box, commonly used for colour healing, contains a light globe which shines light through a coloured glass or perspex filter onto the body.
A yellow filter will allow yellow light to be transmitted, while a blue filter will transmit blue light.   This is a useful method for delivering overall general colours or covering large body areas.
The same principle can be used on a smaller scale with a torch.   Small coloured filters fit onto the end of the torch and can direct light to more specific areas on the body.
For a whole body color, you can fill a room with one particular color by replacing the normal ceiling light with a colored light globe, or by hanging a colored transparent cloth over a window or over the lampshade.   Then you can sit or lie in this room and allow your body to absorb the vibration of the particular color being transmitted.
You could receive a similar effect by covering yourself in the cloth so that the light from the window has to pass through it before reaching your body.
And you could also use a colored slide with a strong slide projector in a dark room.
Using filtered light is most effective if the relevant part of the body is naked, or covered only in light semi-transparent white clothing.   This ensures that the light is not absorbed by thick fabrics before it reaches the body.   And wearing only white ensures that the yellow light your body has requested doesn’t become green light as it passes through a blue shirt.
A transparent coloured crystal or piece of glass, or even a piece of cellophane, can be placed over a specific body area, allowing the daylight to deliver its colour to the body.   Of course, with the crystals you’ll get the vibrational qualities of the particular stone, as well as the vibration of its colour.
To treat specific parts of the body, you may cover the skin with a single or double layer of cellophane, of the desired color, and expose them to mild sunlight or strong electric light.   Be careful, if using sunlight, as cellophane doesn’t absorb the UV radiation.
As a general tonic and chakra balancer, you can create a ‘body filter’ using different colors of cellophane according to the chakra area positions given earlier, and taping the sections together so that the red section covers the bottom, the orange covers the belly, yellow covers the middle abdomen, and so on, right up to the crown where the purple flips over the top of the head.   Lay this over the front or back of your body while exposing it to daylight or electric light.

Indirect or Reflected Light

Indirect light is reflected by the pigments on dense opaque surfaces, such as coloured walls and other painted surfaces, as well as dense fabrics such as coats and carpets and furniture uphostery, rather than coming to you directly from a light source.
This light isn’t transmitted through an object, as with transparent filters.   Some of it is absorbed into the density of the object and some of it is reflected back out, carrying the wavelength and frequency of the reflected colour to whatever it hits.   If you are standing nearby, some of this colour will reach your eyes and some will hit the rest of the body.
Selecting the colors of your walls or the carpet in your kids’ rooms should be given some serious consideration because the vibration will be continuously emitted into the room and you’ll be getting it whenever you’re in that space.

Whenever you feel the need for a specific color, and don’t particularly want to repaint the house, you can drape colored cloths over the furniture, or hang them on the walls.   Change the color of paintings on your walls, or your decorations and ornaments, according to your needs.   Burn candles or bring in a bunch of flowers of the right color.   Change your sheets and pillow cases, or doona cover, or bathroom towels.   Or eat foods that carry your desired colour.
Basically, when you feel the need for a colour, just bring it into your life in whatever way you can.   Even wearing clothes of that colour is a benefit because light will reflect off them onto your bare skin surfaces and into your eyes.   Alternately, you can visit a location that provides the colour you need.   If you feel the need for green, an obvious place is a park full of lawns and trees.   Sitting by the ocean on a clear bright sunny day will give you a burst of blue.   Your local pizza restaurant may have red décor and walls, so you might go out for pizza the next time you feel an urge for red.
You will find that if a color is no good for you, you’ll generally feel repulsed by it at that time.   You may find that the red pizza shop décor just winds you up further when you are feeling angry and frustrated and, at those times, you have no urge for pizza!

A good way to work with eye conditions is to expose a brilliant, reflective surface of the desired colour to sunlight or a strong electric light.   Then you look at the reflective surface rather than directly at the light source, preventing any damage to the light-sensitive apparatus within the eye.

Vibrational or ‘Invisible’ Light

The vibration of a color can be applied to the body without needing to physically expose the body to that color.
This can be done through visualization and color breathing, as well as through the production of solarised water, that can be taken internally, or solarised cream, for external use.
You can close your eyes and visualise the appropriate color surrounding and filling a particular body area (both internally and externally), or flowing through a chakra, or streaming through a particular meridian channel.   You can also use this method to surround yourself, and your aura, with a colored light shield.
A light shield is like a filter of light that surrounds you and allows only compatible vibrations to pass through, according to its colors.   For example, a blue light shield has the qualities of enhancing communication and understanding with other people so, I’ll surround myself with blue when I’m doing something that requires me to be a good listener and a good communicator, and be open to being co-operative.
Colour breathing is similar, but you imagine your inhaled breath as a colour, bring it into your body and send it to where it needs to go.
You can also do a colour meditation, or guided visualization journey, in which you absorb the relevant colour in various ways.   For example, if you were working with orange, you may wander through a european forest in autum, with all the beautiful orange foliage, then come to a clearing where there is an orange picnic blanket and basket.   You sit down and open the basket to find a bottle of orange juice, of which you take a hearty drink, and some yummy carrot sticks and dip.   You eat some of these and then notice there is a beautiful hot air balloon in the sky with a pattern of orange triangles, and so on.
The aim is to absorb the colour into your body in a variety of ways.

Solarisation

The word 'solar' refers to the energy from the sun’s rays.   Solarisation involves using those rays to transmit the required vibrational frequency into a particular substance.

Drinking water can be solarised with a specific color frequency by exposing it, for an hour or so, to bright sunlight.   (If the day is overcast, a longer exposure is required, up to 3 hours.)
Solarise the water by placing it in an appropriately colored glass, or by covering a clear glass with colored cellophane, or by using any of the other methods given in the sections on ‘direct light’ & ‘indirect light’.
This water can then be sipped over a few days to bring that vibration into the body, just as you would with a flower essence.   It is also useful for gargling in the case of throat infections, washing wounds, or bathing the eyes.   The water should be kept in a dark place, or wrapped with a black cloth so that it isn’t exposed to other colors.

The same process can be used to charge a cream with a specific vibration, and it can then be used on the affected areas externally.   This is especially good with skin conditions.
The cream must be as pure and free from perfumes and chemicals as possible.   Place it into an opaque white container and expose it using a coloured filter over the top.   Alternately, if you have a range of small transparent coloured glass jars, you can just leave the cream in them and allow it to be continuously exposed to the colour of the jar.

You can also expose a clear crystal to a specific colour and charge it with that vibration, in a similar way.

Photo-chromo Therapy

Aside from treating someone distantly by using the visualization methods described earlier, you can also treat by exposing a photograph of the person under the appropriate color.
Use any of the methods descibed above and see what works best for you.   I feel that covering the photo with an appropriate coloured sheet of cellophane and exposing it to daylight for a period of time is effective enough.
Remember that whenever doing any kind of distant healing, whether it is a color healing or whether it is sending angels and healing prayers to a loved one in hospital, your intention needs to be clear and focused.   If you intend to do any specific healing or color work for someone, always get permission from them first, as a matter of respect.

As you move through your daily life now, think about all the different ways that you are being exposed to the vibrations of different colors, and begin to be more conscious in this process.
Think about why you’ve chosen to wear a particular piece of clothing.   Is the color good for you on that day?   Or are you choosing it for another reason, in spite of the fact that you’re not really in the mood for that color?
Think about the colors in your house, and the color of your car.   Are there any colors lacking in your home enviroment, that you feel you’d like to have more of?   Think about the simple ways in which you can bring more of these colors into your life.

Take some time to consciously color your world, and explore your world of color!
